Interior Design 101

Interior design 101

It’s that time of year again where parents and kids overload themselves with their final summer activities before the school year begins. Weekends are spent shopping for school clothes and rummaging through bins of school supplies. The back to school commercials are continuously playing in the background, and in your dreams… For your kids, back to school is a dreadful time of year. For you, there’s finally extra time to start working on those home projects you had been meaning to get around to. Here are a few tips from Sheely’s to help you ace your home’s interior design.

Selecting a paint

Choose the paint color for your rooms last. While it may seem like a great idea to start with a fresh coat of paint, you could end up with a color that is less than perfect for the room you’ve designed. Find the furniture pieces you love first and choose a paint that works with those pieces. Visit our Pinterest Board for color inspiration!

Keeping a balance

Try to work at least one pattern into every design project. Your bedroom could feature a pair of matching nightstands or reading lamps. Three evenly spaced bar stools could add a sense of symmetry to your kitchen island. Even if it’s as simple as placing a couch on either side of the coffee table, give the brain a symmetrical element to hook onto and you’ll increase your chances making your guests gasp in delight.

Focal Point

Well-designed rooms often have a focal point — the first thing your eye sees when you enter. Choosing the right item to emphasize sets the tone and mood for a space. Whether it’s an architectural feature, a texture, a color or a light fixture, putting the spotlight on one of these elements will help create a visually interesting and pleasing interior. But what’s the best way to do this? Here are some ways to create a focal point that doesn’t dominate or compete with other objects in a space (found on Houzz.com). Read more about focal points here.

  1. If you looking for home furnishings you will be making a big mistake if you do not check out Sheely’s. They are professional, willing to listen and give great decorating ideas. They are no hassle and not pushy. The quality is superior to anyone we had previously dealt with. Truly a great experience.
