We spend 1/3 of our lives asleep, so investing in a quality mattress is truly essential. Here is your guide to a good night’s sleep.
Signs You May Need a New Mattress:
- You wake up with stiffness, numbness, aches and pains.
- You had a better night’s sleep somewhere other than your own bed (such as a hotel).
- Your mattress shows visible signs of overuse (it sags, has lumps, the interior is exposed, etc.)
- You toss and turn throughout the night.
- Your mattress is 5-7 years old.
In general, a mattress set that has been in use 5-7 years is no longer providing you with the best comfort and support. Our bodies change over time, and the need for good comfort and support only increase with age. That’s why it’s a good idea to compare the mattress and foundation you are sleeping on now to newer models every few years.
If you’re ready to shop for a new mattress, be sure to take your time when picking the right one for you. Lie down on each mattress in the position in which you normally sleep and find your comfort level such as pillow-top, firm or soft. As a general rule, the heavier you are, the firmer your mattress should be to balance out your weight.
Selecting the Best Mattress for You
Determine your budget and needs. Before you do your research, take a look at your budget and personal needs. This will help you determine where to start!
Do your homework. Research your options before you buy. This will help when choosing the mattress size and type that will work best for your needs. Think back to a time where you slept great at a hotel or friend’s house. Use that as your starting point to help narrow down choices.
Choose a store you trust. A good night’s sleep is a necessity, not a luxury. A mattress is an investment that affects your quality of life. Let the Sleep Experts at Sheely’s Better Sleep Gallery help you select the right mattress to fit your needs.

Test-drive your new mattress. Once in the store, follow the S.L.E.E.P. test. Remove your shoes and lie down on several different models in various positions. (It’s best to go mattress-shopping in comfortable pants so you can move around.) Tip: When deciding the best level of firmness for you, lie down and place your hand under the small of your back. If there’s a gap then it suggests the mattress may be too firm for you.
Go the extra mile. During your test drive, be sure to spend extra time in the position you usually sleep in. It can take up to 15 minutes to relax enough to feel the true support of a mattress, so don’t rush it. The more time you take in a store, the less likely you’ll have buyer’s remorse later on.
