2017 is on the horizon and it’s time to make those resolutions to lose weight, head to the gym more often, save money, and spend more time with family and friends. A new YOU! While these goals are fantastic and we wish you the best, shouldn’t we set some goals for our homes too? According to the Huffington Post: “We are all products of our environment, and vice versa, since the environments we create reflect and affect our physical, mental, and emotional health. When life becomes messy or disorderly, our physical as well as mental/emotional health can also get muddled and we become less energetic and less efficient.” (Read the full article here)
So let’s start by clearing the clutter! In the course of a year, we can acquire a lot of stuff and it may seem like your cupboards and drawers are about to burst. Make a pact with yourself to go from room to room once a month and get rid of items you don’t use, wear or love. Donate them if you can! When you clear up space it’s easier to get to the things you use most often and you’ll think twice about what you bring in (helpful if you plan to budget more this year).
Remember – try not to set the bar too high or you may set yourself up for failure. Set goals that are manageable and yield big results, like giving your home a fresh coat of paint this year! Start one room at a time so your aren’t left feeling overwhelmed. This is an easy and inexpensive way to add new life to your home. Not only can this make your home look brand new and reflect your personal style, it also reduces dust and improves air quality.
Add some new accessories! Accessories are like jewelry for your home. Now that you’ve painted, your walls may be looking a little bare. Or maybe the shelves are filled with outdated accessories that are collecting dust. Like we said above, clear the clutter, or dust off the keepsakes and give them a new home! If your lacking in the accessories department – grab your spouse or a friend and head to Sheely’s. Our decorators have arranged hundreds of fabulous accessories throughout our showroom. Seeing them on display is a great way to visualize them in your own space!
Add some greenery to your home. Practice your green thumb this year and add some indoor plants to your home. With a little help from google or your gifted gardening friends, keeping indoor plants can be easy to do! Not only is greenery Pantone’s color of the year for 2017, it can also have many benefits to you and your family aside from the aesthetics. Having indoor plants reduces carbon dioxide levels, increases humidity, reduces certain pollutants, reduces airborne dust levels, and keeps air temperatures down. Once your feeling confident – try an indoor herb garden!
Finally, and most importantly, vow to make your home a safe-haven. If you aren’t already taking safety measures at home, be sure to start now. Home is where the heart is, so let’s protect them shall we? Start by making sure you have a carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarms. Be sure to test them periodically and replace batteries when needed. You can pick them up at your local hardware store. It’s worth the small cost, believe me. You should have a carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarm on every floor of your home.
Always check your vents and ducts behind the dryer and look for dryer lint. Lint may seem innocent, but it’s highly combustible, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, accounting for more than 15,000 building fires a year.
There are so many small measures to take to keep your home safe – we could go on for days. So we’ll just leave you with this comprehensive home safety checklist from realsimple.com so you can start checking it off today!
